Bathroom adventures can be quite embarrassing, especially when you're not the only one home. Knock out the embarrassment by controlling toilet smells.
I previously wrote about surviving your in-laws, where I mentioned needing to diffuse some Purification essential oil blend to keep from routinely walking through a brick wall of stench brought to us by entertaining 97 year olds hopped up on a horrible diet, consisting largely of laxatives. While that was effective, it meant several times each day I had to check on the diffuser to make sure it was still running and had enough oils and water in it to continue running for 4-8 more hours (we had to run it continuously for a week). While that was largely effective, allowing others to use that bathroom, it quickly became another chore.

If you're anything like me, you enjoy taking on a bit of creativity to reduce your workload so you can enjoy those moments that should be enjoyed, instead of scheduling bathroom checks multiple times a day. Instead, make a spray that people can use directly in the toilet bowl before going. This spray includes essential oils that somehow manage to trap odors, and provide a nice smell while using the toilet.
What you'll need:
- 2 TBSP shy of 1 cup water
- 2 tsp. rubbing alcohol (or substitute 4 tsp. vodka)
- 2 tsp. vegetable glycerine (or substitute 1 tsp. liquid soap)
- 45-60 drops of an essential oil or blend of your choice
- 1 8oz spray bottle, OR divide into 2 4oz spray bottles
** PLEASE NOTE ** Don't be fooled by clever marketing. Not all essential oils are created equally. Make sure you're not wasting your money on fake or altered essential oils (even if they're labeled as “pure essential oil”). Don't miss our explosive report outlining the dirty little secrets of the essential oil industry to ensure you're not wasting your money on brands of oils that legally mislead you through deceitful marketing practices.
(Quick Tip: use the spray bottles with the triggers because its easier for people of all ages and hand strength levels to use. You can also use the pump style sprayer too.)
My favorite DIY essential oil blend to use for this is:
- 20 drops each: Tea Tree, Lemon, and Lime essential oils
Do you *NEED* to DIY???
Do you really need all of that? Not necessarily. You can just drip a few drops of an essential oil directly into the toilet or make a spray bottle of just water and essential oils (if you do that, be careful not to get it on your skin). However, using some vodka or vegetable glycerine in with the essential oils helps make the oils last longer and helps them disperse in the toilet more effectively. I do like to keep a couple of spray bottles made up on standby for when we need it. Diluting the oils with the recipes we offer in this post helps to stretch out the oils you're using… especially if you're using more expensive, higher quality essential oils.
What essential oil or blend you choose really depends on what you like. That's the beauty of DIY projects like this… you can tailor it to exactly what you will enjoy, instead of being relegated to the stuff at the store. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Citrus Fresh Essential Oil Blend
- Purification Essential Oil Blend

I love using peppermint essential oil one too because if you can't go, but know you need to, that helps move things along so you're not spending your day in the bathroom, wondering why you didn't bring the iPad in to watch Netflix while waiting.
What is your favorite essential oil combination for toilet sprays?
