Blue tansy essential oil has a sweet, fruity, floral aroma with a hint of herbaceous tones. With many potent benefits, it's a wonder why blue tansy isn't more popular among oil users.
**WARNING** Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare, also known as Common Tansy) and Blue Tansy (Tanacetum annuum) oils are very different. They are easily mixed up accidentally, which is NOT something you want to do. Tansy oil is high in B-Thujone and poses a hazard for neurotoxicity. Take the extra time to ensure you're buying or using the correct one (annuum).
Blue tansy essential oil is also known as Moroccan Chamomile or Moroccan Tansy. True blue tansy oil can be diffchallengingfind (or very expensive) and is frequently adulterated or modified. You must ensure that you are purchasing from a reputable supplier, or you run the risk of buying a synthetic version.
Because Blue Tansy has similar properties to Chamomile, it is sometimes also referred to as “Blue Chamomile.” If you see a reference to “Blue Chamomile” in a recipe, it is likely a reference to Blue Tansy.

How Is Blue Tansy Essential Oil Made?
Blue tansy essential oil comes from the Tanacetum annuum plant of the Asteraceae family.
The stems, leaves, and gorgeous golden flowers of the blue tansy plant are gathered and steam-distilled.
During that steam distillation process, a sesquiterpene compound called matricin goes through a chemical reaction, creating chamazulene. Chamazulene is what turns the oil a deep blue color.
Blue Tansy Essential Oil Health Benefits
Blue tansy's constituents include:
- Chamazulene (gives it the blue color)
- B-Myrcene
- Camphor
- Sabinene
- B-Eudesmol
- 3,6-Dihydrochamazulene
- B-Pinene
- a-Phellandrene
What is Chamazulene? It's an unsaturated hydrocarbon derived from sesquiterpenes, formed by the breakdown of matricine during the steam distillation process. Chamazulene is considered to have anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory properties and benefits cells.
Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt and other holistic aromatherapy experts often recommend blue tansy essential oil for its use as a potent anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine, anti-allergen and anti-fungal applications.

Before using blue tansy essential oil topical, be sure to dilute it with your favorite carrier oil. Typically, I recommend diluting one drop of blue tansy oil per ml of carrier oil, but at the minimum, dilute it to 50%. Before applying to a large area, do a small patch test first. If the results show irritated skin, you didn't dilute enough and should add more carrier oil. If you have sensitive skin, you may need to dilute more.
A carrier oil can be any cold-pressed, seed-based oil (ideally organic and unrefined). This includes most cooking oil, like coconut oil, avocado oil, and olive oil. Personally, we LOVE using sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, and the V6 Carrier oil (made by Young Living). This is the best way to dilute your essential oils for topical use.

Blue Tansy Essential Oil Substitute Ideas
Blue Tansy's popularity in beauty products surged, causing it to be over-harvested, almost entirely out of existence in the wild. With modern farming initiatives, supplies are steadily increasing, but it’s still one of the more expensive essential oils. A 5ml bottle typically costs close to $100, which causes many people to look for a cheaper or more readily available blue tansy alternative.
Becuase of Blue Tansy's chamazulene content, there are only a few oils that would sufficiently replace it:

Where to Buy High-Quality Blue Tansy Essential Oil
Don't be fooled into purchasing substandard essential oil brands using clever marketing and loose labeling laws. Be sure you know about the 10 Dirty Little Secrets of the essential oil industry so you can make the best choice for your needs.
Warning: DO NOT purchase your essential oils through Amazon or similar websites!
Any website that allows anyone to sell, such as Amazon, eBay, Walmart… etc… are terrible places to purchase essential oils. While you may get a “good deal,” knowing who you're purchasing from is difficult. There are many counterfeit essential oils being sold that are causing health ailments, major skin reactions, and a lot of misery. These are NOT high-quality essential oils. They are fakes being sold purely for profit.
Where we purchase our essential oils, and why
We purchase our blue tansy oil from Young Living because they set a higher standard for essential oil production than what I've found throughout the rest of the industry. Their farm-to-table type of approach and testing at every phase of their farming, distillation, and bottling processes has proven to me time and time again to be the closest thing out there to buying from your local farmer or DIYing, only better with their 25+ years of continual research, testing, and improvement. They are completely transparent in everything they do and even open their farms so you can see for yourself (or involve yourself in the process).
