3 Different Ways To Make Rose Water
There are three main ways to make rose water: using fresh rose petals, dried rose petals, or rose essential oil. Each of these tree methods of making rose water are just as effective as the other, but may have different costs.
Personally, we most often use fresh rose petals or dried rose petals because we have several large rose bushes on our property, providing us with copious amounts of rose petals throughout the year.
Regardless where you acquire your roses from, please be sure to use roses grown sustainably without use of harmful chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, or insecticides. These chemicals often used in conventional farming practices are harmful to human health.

DIY Rosewater Recipe featuring Dried Roses
What you’ll need:
- 2 cups of HOT (not boiling) distilled water or Moon Water (480ml)
- 1 tsp 100 proof clear alcohol (vodka works well)
- 1/2 cup of dried rose petals (usually from 2 large roses)
- A Strainer
Directions for making your rosewater using dried roses:
- Before you get started, be sure to rinse your rose petals to ensure they’re free from any dirt or bugs.
- Add your roses, vodka (optional, but highly recommended), and water to a pot and simmer on low.
- Once simmering, place a lid on your pot.
- Routinely check your roses and water and continue simmering until the rose petals lose color.
- Once your rose petals are colorless, remove the lid from the pot, and remove the pot from the heat, allowing the water inside to cool completely.
- Once room temperature, strain the water into a glass jar, removing the petals, and store in a cool place away from sunlight.
To maximize the amount of rose essence you’re extracting from the petals, you may also opt to crush your rose petals using a mortar and pestle.
