Essential Oils For Nervous System Support
In the modern world filled with constant stressors and distractions, your nervous system often bears the brunt of your fast-paced lifestyle. However, delving into natural remedies, such as essential oils, can unveil a treasure trove of benefits for maintaining a healthy nervous system. These potent plant extracts have been revered for centuries for their therapeutic properties, offering a holistic approach to enhancing overall well-being.
Essential oils can calm your mind, soothe frazzled nerves, and promote whole-body relaxation. By incorporating these aromatic elixirs into your daily routines through diffusers or topical application, you can harness their ability to support a balanced nervous system and cultivate inner harmony in an increasingly chaotic world.
Understanding the Nervous System
The nervous system is a complex communication network in the body consisting of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Each part is crucial in transmitting messages between the brain and various body parts. This intricate system controls everything from basic body functions to more complex processes like thinking and emotions.
A healthy nervous system is essential for overall well-being, allowing us to move, think, feel, and react appropriately to our environment. When this system functions optimally, we experience improved cognitive function, better coordination, and faster reflexes. It's important to nourish our nervous system through exercise, adequate sleep, reducing toxin exposure, natural wellness practices (such as using essential oils), and stress management techniques to maintain vitality for a balanced life.

** PLEASE NOTE ** Don't be fooled by clever marketing. Not all essential oils are created equally. Methods of Application
There are a few main ways to use essential oils to support your nervous system:
- Topical Application: dilute your essential oils with your favorite carrier oil, and rub it directly on your skin
- Inhalation or Diffusion: add a few drops of your essential oils to a diffuser, smell the bottle cap, or add some diluted oils to your hand and sniff your hands directly. Just be careful not to use too much too fast or you could get dizzy.
While ingesting oils is also a method of using essential oils, I don't personally recommend it in most applications without being well-versed in how to ingest oils safely or under the care of a local aromatherapist, herbalist, or naturopath.
A carrier oil can be any cold-pressed, seed-based oil (ideally organic and unrefined). This includes most cooking oil, like coconut oil, avocado oil, and olive oil. Personally, we LOVE using sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, and the V6 Carrier oil (made by Young Living). This is the best way to dilute your essential oils for topical use.

Additional Tips for Supporting Your Nervous System
There are several lifestyle choices that serve as complementary practices to enhance the benefits of essential oils.
Adequate sleep is essential for a healthy nervous system, allowing the brain to rest and recharge.
Regular physical activity can also help support a healthy nervous system by reducing stress, moving your lymphatic system, and supporting your liver (which is the foundation of your overall wellness).
Maintaining a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can also provide the necessary nutrients to support nerve function and overall brain health. I personally use a modified Paleo diet (modified by adding in homemade sourdough bread and other recipes), which has gone a long way to helping support my nervous system and healing (you can read my story here).
Many people have also reported that phototherapy is very helpful in supporting their nervous systems. Looking through the research and documentation, I've found it quite fascinating and something to seriously consider, especially if you tend to not enjoy taking supplements or need something to compliment your essential oil use.
By incorporating these lifestyle factors into your routine, you can take proactive steps toward ensuring a strong and resilient nervous system that supports your overall well-being.
Closing Thoughts
Incorporating essential oils into your self-care routine can benefit the nervous system in several ways. Their therapeutic properties can help reduce stress, anxiousness, and tension while promoting relaxation and an overall sense of calmness.
